Bogus doctor caught at Parirenyatwa hospital

A man posing as a medical doctor has been arrested at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare. The fake doctor,

Douglas Garikayi Mutoredzanwa, was caught holding an X-ray film upside down while pretending to analyze it in front of a patient. Mutoredzanwa had entered Consultation Room 2 of Parirenyatwa Hospital under false pretenses on April 23.

He deceived a medical doctor attending to a patient, Wilson Kurangwa, by falsely claiming to be a fellow medical doctor.

Mutoredzanwa’s suspicious actions were uncovered when he made comments while misinterpreting the X-ray film.

He then abandoned the film and took two surgical blades, pethidine drugs, three syringes, cotton, cannula-sensitive tapes, and gloves.

Kurangwa grew wary of Mutoredzanwa’s handling of the X-ray and promptly notified Whatmore Tarugarira, the loss control officer at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Tarugarira, along with security guards, apprehended Mutoredzanwa after he failed to convincingly explain his purpose at the hospital.

His attempt at analyzing an X-ray while holding it upside down only fueled suspicions further.

Mutoredzanwa faced charges related to impersonation and theft of medical supplies when he appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

The court took note of his previous run-ins with the law and remanded him in custody pending further proceedings.

Despite his claims of being a nurse rather than a medical doctor, Mutoredzanwa’s misrepresentation and attempt at theft painted a damning picture of his actions at the hospital.

It is alarming that individuals like Mutoredzanwa can easily gain access to medical facilities and deceive medical practitioners and this is not the first time this has taken place at the health institution.
