UEFA Explains Rationale Behind Julián Álvarez’s Disallowed Penalty

UEFA has addressed Atlético de Madrid’s inquiry regarding the controversial decision to overturn Julián Álvarez’s penalty in their recent UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.
In an official statement, UEFA confirmed that although the contact was minimal, Álvarez unintentionally touched the ball twice once with his standing foot before striking it.

According to the Laws of the Game (Law 14.1), this double touch required VAR intervention, leading to the goal being disallowed.
UEFA also revealed plans to engage with FIFA and IFAB to assess whether the rule should be reconsidered in cases where the second touch is clearly accidental.
