Learn More About Viral Doctor Qwabe

Doctor Sandile Qwabe is the latest viral sensation whose ‘eccentric’ personality has, more than anything, raised questions about society’s sadistic fixation with classism.

Social media exploded in a furore when images surfaced showing Dr Qwabe, an independent medical practitioner, dressed in scrubs with a bucket hat peeled back in ‘pantsula’ style, worn off mocassins with no socks and smoking a cigarette.

Immediately, without vetting his credentials, the qualified healthcare professional was subjected to widespread mockery.

Bizarrely, most users criticised Dr Qwabe for bringing his esteemed career into disrepute with his overzealous TikTok videos that have since garnered him more than 137K followers.

More shocking, reports soon surfaced that the eccentric doctor was reported to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

While the council had not released a statement when this article was published, HPCSA insiders, according to Daily Maverick reporter Velani Ludidi, made it clear that no complaints about Dr Qwabe had been received.

According to our research, Dr Qwabe holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh), which comprises a six-year full-time course and opens the door for graduates to enter the field as surgeons, paediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, and family medicine practitioners.

Moreover, according to Wits University‘s MBBCh entry requirements, applicants not only have to submit aggregate Level 5 scores on their matric results but also perform exceptionally well in the National Benchmark Test (NBT), which, the Central University of Technology explained, is “designed to measure a writer’s ability to transfer understanding of Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy and Mathematics to the demands of tertiary coursework.”

Also, Law Insider further explains that as an independent medical practitioner, a health professional with Dr Qwabe’s credentials is legally permitted to render care and services without direction or supervision.

In a nutshell, beyond his eccentric personality and unorthodox dress code, Dr Qwabe is as qualified as any doctor in scrubs. If anything, the ire he drew from social media exposed the toxic nature of cancel culture.

The famous doctor, who renders care to patients in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), has yet to issue a public response to the backlash.
