Gupta, Bosasa liquidator Cloete Murray dies from gunshot wounds in suspected hit

Bosasa and Gupta company liquidator, Cloete Murray, has succumbed to his injuries after he was shot and wounded while driving along the Newroad offramp on N1 North on Saturday.

Murray, 50, and his son, Thomas, 28, were travelling together when unknown gunmen opened fire at their vehicle in what is believed to be an apparent hit, News24 reports.

Police said the son was shot dead at the scene, while the father was rushed to hospital.

Cloete Murray later succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning, said police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello.

“Police are now investigating two counts of murder,” Sello said. The circumstances that led to the incident are unknown at this stage.

Crime activist Yusuf Abramjee took to his Twitter account to detail the Cloete and Thomas Murray shooting incident. He claims that Cloete was shot in the head twice.

“While they were driving, gunmen came alongside their car and opened fire; the vehicle pulled off to the side. The son was in the passenger seat; he died immediately, and I’m told that Murray was shot in the head twice. Murray was involved in a number of high-profile liquidations, including those of Bosasa, a number of Gupta companies, and other cases,” said Abramjee.

He also revealed that Cloete and his son were working on a high-profile case. Abramjee said that there was an attempt to get rid of him.

“It appears that this incident was a hit to assassinate him, and in the mix of it all, his son got shot dead in broad daylight on South Africa’s busiest freeway,” said Abramjee.
