How Joyous Celebration Musician Gunned Down His Rapist

When she was 16 years old, Mbali Lekhuleni, a member of the Joyous Celebration group, shot and killed her rapist.

The anti-gender-based violence campaigner gave a sit-down interview on The UnChristian Network on YouTube, where she went into great detail about the sad incident in Tsakane, Gauteng.

During the December holidays, the singer was in Vosloorus visiting her family when her aunt left her brother in charge of the residence in Tsakane. They made plans to attend a park party over the weekend, and as it started to get chilly, she went in with a friend to get a jersey. However, a paedophile stopped them on their way back to the park.

Lekhuleni claimed that as they attempted to flee, the armed man fired a shot in the air, causing her to fall to the ground. He threatened her with a rifle and led her away to a remote location.

“He took me to someone’s yard. We jumped over a fence. He took off his jacket and jeans and told me to come. That was my first time. My virginity was just broken in that violent way. He told me to lie down and he did that. He raped me,” said the singer who joined Joyous Celebration in 2018.

After, Lekhuleni said she heard him mention taking her to another location while he had a gun pointed at her.

“He tossed the gun aside when I asked him. Then he raped me again, but when he stood up he looked in the opposite direction. Then I saw an opportunity, since he stood up and looked in another direction. Let me get up and run to that gun.

“I held the gun, and when he looked back he found me holding the gun. When he tried to approach me, I just pulled the trigger. Imagine, I am 16, I don’t know how to use a gun. That gun was prepared. The only thing I did was pull the trigger. It fired and shot him. Then he came to me trying to fight while I was still holding the gun. I fired again. Then he fell, he fell on top of me. I could literally feel his last breath on me. He died on top of me,” Lekhuleni explained.

The gospel singer said that she was exonerated of murder because she had acted in self-defense. She also found out, the night she was at the police station, that her rapist had allegedly raped another lady that same night.

“I was numb for a week after that incident, ” Lekhuleni added.
