Speeding Kombi Claims Two Young Lives on Journey to Collect School Results
Two students lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Wednesday afternoon as the kombi they were travelling in overturned while enroute to Mt St Mary’s High School in Hwedza to collect their O-Level results.
The victims, identified as Denzel and Wayne, were among a group of passengers travelling from Harare.
Mabvuku is the home of Denzel, who excelled in his O-Level exams, earning six As. We will later take his body to Zvimba for his burial on Saturday. Wayne, whose results are still pending, hails from Southlea Park, where his wake is also taking place.
Following the accident, Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital rushed the students. Initially, reports suggested multiple fatalities, but later clarification revealed that only Denzel and Wayne died, while others sustained serious injuries. Several parents are now anxiously hoping for the recovery of those injured, including one student reportedly in a coma.
A family source expressed their sorrow, saying, “We are devastated. Denzel had such a bright future ahead of him. Losing him at such a young age is unbearable.” Denzel had achieved 6 As, 3 Bs, and 1 C in his exams, showcasing his academic talent.

Mt. St. Mary’s High School released a statement expressing deep condolences to the families and friends affected by the tragedy. “This is an incredibly painful time for our school community. We ask for prayers for those injured and for the families grieving their loss. Although early reports suggested a higher death toll, we can confirm that two students have passed away. The others remain in critical condition.”
The school’s development committee chairman, Mr. A. Nyasha, shared further details about the incident, revealing that the accident occurred near Chizema Shops, roughly 15 km from the school. “Our hearts go out to the grieving families. This is an unimaginable loss for everyone involved. We also appreciate the hospital staff for saving the injured and the parent who helped afterward.”
Witnesses reported that the kombi was speeding at the time of the crash, raising concerns about the safety of transport for students.
Schoolmates of Wayne paid tribute to him, saying, “Rest in peace to the greatest mafia in the world. You made an unforgettable impact on all of us.”
This tragedy has left the school community in mourning, as families and friends come together to remember the lives of the two young men lost too soon.
