Eight Die In Eastern Cape Mass Shooting

Eight people were shot and killed at a birthday party early in Kwazakele, Eastern Cape, on Sunday evening, 29 January. The police are hunting the perpetrators.

Two unknown gunmen entered the yard of a residence in Makanda Street, where the homeowner was having a birthday party, between 17:15 and 17:30 and opened fire.

“Seven people (three females and four males) were fatally injured while another four people (two females and two males) sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment,” said Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

One of the injured victims died in the hospital. The homeowner was also among the dead.

The Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No arrests have been made thus far.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mene, condemned the mass murder as an act of cowardice and a blatant disregard for human life.

“These victims were killed by criminals, and we will not rest until we find out what happened and who was responsible for these callous and cold-blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims,” said Mene.
