Senzo Meyiwa’s Friend Cries In Court As He Explained His Death

The sixth witness in the Senzo Meyiwa case, Mthokozisi Thwala, who was the footballer’s friend testified in the High Court in Pretoria that he was heartbroken as he held Meyiwa’s hand and he was unresponsive on the night he was shot at singer Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus.

While sobbing in court, Thwala explained that before they got to the hospital, he held Meyiwa’s hand and the footballer responded and showed signs of life.

“As we were going to the hospital, I held his hand to see if he would respond, and he did. Shortly after we arrived at the hospital, I held the hand again, and there was no response,” he said.

Meyiwa didn’t gasp for air, so Thwala claimed he wasn’t sure when he stopped breathing. All Thwala can recall is that Meyiwa was declared dead 10 minutes after being brought in on a stretcher.

Thwala also admitted to the court that he felt uncomfortable visiting Kelly’s house since he would be betraying Mandisa, Senzo’s wife.

Going to Kelly’s house was strange because, according to him, he had been friends with Mandisa as well. When asked by State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi why he felt uneasy visiting the Khumalo residence, he responded as follows:

“I was also Mandisa’s friend, so it didn’t feel right for me to go to Senzo’s girlfriend’s place when I know his wife”.

Thwala revealed that Meyiwa was the one who persuaded him to attend, particularly so he could see his newly born daughter.

On October 26, 2014, Meyiwa was fatally shot at the Khumalos’ residence during an alleged robbery.

The charges against Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli include premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of weapons and ammunition without a permit.
