China donates military gear to Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa received a substantial donation of military hardware from China, potentially signalling a new chapter in Chinese military involvement in the Southern African region.

The equipment handed over includes a range of military assets such as armoured fighting vehicles, personnel carriers, ambulances, motorized water purifiers, patrol boats, minibuses, sniper rifles, machine guns, and hand pistols.

The Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, presenting the donation at the Inkomo Brigade, emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations. President Mnangagwa expressed gratitude, acknowledging China as a reliable and consistent friend.

Earlier in July, a Chinese official affirmed the country’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s military. This commitment was highlighted during the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) 96th Anniversary Celebration held in Harare. Defense Attaché of the Chinese Embassy, Senior Colonel Yonglong Zhu, emphasized the enduring friendship between the PLA and Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF).

Colonel Yonglong stated, “The traditional friendship between the People’s Liberation Army and Zimbabwe Defense Forces was fostered by the founding fathers of the two countries in the 1960s and has always been cherished and constantly promoted by the two sides over the past decades.”

Highlighting recent developments, Colonel Yonglong noted, “The recent years have witnessed this brotherly relationship further strengthened with friendly exchanges and cooperation in all fields flourishing.”

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, both armies maintained their cooperation and exchanges, actively overcoming obstacles and contributing to the ongoing development of their relationship.

Historically, Russia has played a crucial role in providing military support to African nations. However, the current geopolitical landscape suggests a potential shift, with Zimbabwe in Southern Africa leaning towards China for military collaboration.

Reports earlier this year hinted at a trend in West African countries, including Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, tilting towards China for military support. The concerns regarding China’s expansion in Africa are further heightened by the possibility of Beijing acquiring basing rights through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), along with security agreements and military sales.
