What Mutsvangwa did that angered Mnangagwa revealed

ZANU-PF Insiders have revealed the reason why President Emmerson Mnangagwa fired war veterans minister Chris Mutsvangwa, considered one of his closest allies.

On 3 February 2024, Zimbos were shocked after the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, announced the dismissal of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Christopher Mutsvangwa. Dr Rushwaya did not mention the reason for the firing, but added that the dismissal was immediate.

It is yet to be seen if Mutsvangwa will remain the spokesperson of ZANU-PF after losing his ministerial position.

This is not the first time Mutsvangwa has been fired from a high-profile job. In 2016, late former President Mugabe dismissed him as Minister of Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators and Former Political Detainees in the thick of ZANU-PF succession wars. In 2018, President Mnangagwa fired the raucous politician as his special advisor.

Why President Mnangagwa Fired Chris Mutsvangwa

People within the ruling party have revealed why the President showed Mutsvangwa the door. The rabid politician was fired for insubordination.

Zimlive reported that Mutsvangwa was supposed to step down as chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) upon his appointment as minister, but he could not.

A source told the publication:

“He was told you can’t be a minister and also be chairman of the war vets. He was insubordinate, he refused to let go.”

On Saturday, 3 February, Mutsvangwa stormed Mnangagwa’s office unannounced, and made demands that infuriated the President:

“Mutsvangwa had a proposal. He said in order to avoid the small inconvenience of him having to leave the war vets, Mnangagwa should appoint him as state security minister instead. The president also didn’t like the crude way he came across and there was a fallout. Mnangagwa consulted his deputies Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi and they agreed with him that Mutsvangwa should be removed immediately.”

President Mnangagwa felt like Mutsvangwa was appointing himself.

Over the weekend, former Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere revealed on X what could also be another reason Mutsvangwa was fired:

“He clashed with the blue eyed (neophyte) running the Ministry of Information. He wrote to ED and complained that (Information) Minister (Jenfan) Muswere knew nothing about the party policy and was just a relative in the wrong position. ED got offended and fired him on a weekend. Chris does not hold back.
