‘We are a thousand years behind’: Pres Mnangagwa challenges ICT minister

President Emmerson Mnangagwa says there is no need to reinvent the wheel but to take advantage of the friendly ties with other countries to leapfrog Zimbabwe’s technology.

Speaking after touring the Dubai Police Headquarters, President Mnangagwa expressed his appreciation of the technology in Dubai and challenged his Science and Technology Minister Hon. Tatenda Mavetera to follow suit.

“After everything I have seen here we don’t have in Zimbabwe, we are almost a 1000 years behind in terms of technology when we look at what is happening here. For example, they can look at the entire city from one room, monitor, and reach any place in minutes,” President Mnangagwa said.

President Mnangagwa directed Minister of ICT, Postal & Courier Services. Hon. Dr. T. A. Mavetera to ork towards bringing such wonderful technology to the country.

“Now I need serious cooperation for Zimbabwe and Dubai because this is the way to go. It’s technology in action. I was saying to my Minister in technology, I want to have this expertise in science and technology, which we have seen here. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when it is already being applied elsewhere, and UAE is very friendly to Zimbabwe. So we need to further cooperation in science and technology for us to leapfrog our technology.”
