Watch: Tyla had to be lifted at the Met Gala in Balmain Sand dress

Tyla made her debut at the Met Gala on May 6th, where she wore a form-fitting Balmain outfit inspired by “the sands of time”.

The singer’s outfit included an hourglass clutch and proved difficult to walk in, as seen in the red carpet footage where she was assisted up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This year’s Met Gala theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” with a dress code inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, “The Garden of Time”.

Speaking with La La Anthony during Vogue‘s official red carpet livestream, Tyla said she and the creative team “wanted something out of the box this year.”

“I just love the outfit and how everything turned out,” Tyla added.

Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing told Vogue that inspiration for Tyla’s Met Gala dress — which boasts three colours of sand and was mixed with micro-crystal studs — was inspired by a “desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece.”

“The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination and I could not be happier with the end result,” he said.

Tyla told Vogue she thought “the idea was crazy and I loved it.”

“I’m excited and a little nervous but I’m looking forward to having a fun night at the Met,” she added.
