Great News! Econet, Netone, Telecel To Introduce Data Bundles Sharing

In what will be welcome news to mobile internet users, Econet, Telecel and NetOne are set to introduce a new feature that will let them transfer unused data bundles to their loved ones.

Data sharing which has been long overdue is part of an array of new features that are set to be introduced in the second quarter by mobile network operators.

Taking to his Twitter account on Tuesday, Chairperson of the ICT Parliamentary Portfolio Committee Chalton Hwende shared feedback his committee received from mobile network operators.

Econet, NetOne and Telecel responded to queries by the ICT Parliamentary Portfolio Committee which included when they will introduce data sharing. The mobile network operators revealed that the feature is set to be introduced at a yet-to-be-revealed date in April.

“Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have advanced plans in place to launch this facility to mobile consumers particularly targeting those customers who have been unable to exhaust their data bundles due to interruptions stemming from such issues like power outages (load shedding and faults), travel or poor network connectivity. This service will allow consumers to transfer the unused portion to beneficiaries who may then be able to exhaust these remaining balances, instead of these being expunged without recourse. We expect the first launch of this service to be in April 2023, once technical configurations are completed and product trials and communication to the public has been done,” part of the ICT Parliamentary Portfolio Committee feedback report reads.

The data-sharing feature will be a welcome development among Zimbabweans who have incurred losses after being unable to exhaust their bundles due to load shedding and service interruptions. Hwende revealed that the ICT Parliamentary Portfolio Committee met with the mobile network operators today.
