ZESA: Mnangagwa Plans To Disconnect Households From National Grid

“Extraordinary measures are needed to address power shortages": Mnangagwa

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa said yesterday that in response to the crippling energy crisis, households may be disconnected from the national electricity grid.

“We have a blueprint which targets households to run on solar, so we remove them from the national grid. In government, we are already incorporating solar systems in packages which public servants enjoy. Such employer-assisted interventions, across the sectors, will see us speedily migrating more households to solar,” Mnangagwa wrote in his weekly opinion article published in a State-owned weekly newspaper.

Mnangagwa said last week that he convened an emergency meeting of government departments and service providers whose functions involve power production and supply to discuss the power crisis.

Zimbabweans are experiencing power outages that last for days at a time.

The Zambezi River Authority, which manages the dam, informed the Zimbabwe Power Company last week that Kariba South should be shut down until at least January because it had run out of water to generate electricity.

Kariba generates more than 70% of the country’s electricity.

Industry has warned that the electricity crisis will force some businesses to close or raise the prices of their goods and services in order to compensate for production and operational losses caused by the use of generators.

The energy crisis, Mnangagwa said, was at the very least expected to persist until April next year when water levels at Kariba are expected to have risen.

“Kariba contributes almost half of our power needs, which is why a reduction in its generation capacity immediately registers throughout our economy, and in our lives,” Mnangagwa said.

“Our focus must now be broader than the Ministry of Energy and Power Development. Energy is pervasive. The Transport ministry, particularly its rail arm, has a big role to play. It has to deliver enough coal to all thermal stations, all of which must fire at full capacity.”

Mnangagwa said importing electricity was a priority as the current power crisis posed a threat to the viability of industry and Zimbabwe’s ability to attract investment across all sectors.

Energy minister Zhemu Soda on Friday confessed that funding for power imports was not readily available.

However, Mnangagwa said resources would be made available.

“The cost of importing power is relatively less than a slowdown in industry, whose capacity utilisation has been rising steadily. Or stoppages altogether, not to mention delays in new investments caused by power shortages,” Mnangagwa said.

“Such an eventuality makes us unattractive to investments, foremost, foreign direct investments, which are so hard to attract, and can easily choose other country destinations. I am concerned about power-related stresses which the industry is currently facing. Solutions will be found urgently.”

Mnangagwa pleaded with the private sector to join government in investing in renewable energy and close the supply gap.

“The government and the private sector must now begin a conversation on what, together, we need to do to step up investments in renewables. We have enough sunshine, we have enough land for solar farms. We must now move together, in concert, so we step up investments in energy. We now all know and appreciate the costs that come with power shortages.”

At present, Zimbabwe is importing a combined 250 megawatts (MW) from Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa.

The remainder of Zimbabwe’s power comes from Hwange Power Station.

Judge Heidi Klum, reminding audiences that Nightbirde was a special part of the AGT family, thanked the Mzansi Youth Choir for their “beautiful” tribute, adding that the song held “a special meaning” in her heart. “What a surprise to hear that song; your voices are fantastic,” Sofia Vergara said. “That was the perfect AGT audition.” Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Terry Crews, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell hitting the golden buzzer. Unbelievable,” he said. “You deserve so much more than a ‘yes,’ and to be here, you deserve a ‘thank you.’ Thank you so much.” RELATED: Singing Kids, Spoken Word Poets — Every One of Howie Mandel's Golden Buzzers on AGT When asked by Cowell, one of the members, Zoe — speaking on behalf of the Mzansi Youth Choir — said they chose to sing Nightbirde’s song because they were “inspired and touched” after watching her Season 16 Audition on the same AGT stage. Zoe said they were moved enough to record their own version of “It’s OK,” which – to their surprise — prompted a response from Nightbirde, who “responded so beautifully.” The anthem then became a “pillar of strength” as the choir continued through their own difficult times. “We just want to continue her legacy, and that’s why we chose this song,” said Zoe. But most visibly moved by the performance was Cowell, who said to those around him, “This brought back so many memories for me.” Audiences and Crews clapped as Cowell wrestled with his emotions. Vergara rubbed his shoulder to support Cowell as he began to cry, getting choked up while speaking. With spectators chanting “Golden Buzzer,” Crews came from backstage and joined the Judges as, together, they pressed the Golden Buzzer in Nightbirde’s memory. The Mzansi Youth Choir cheered and embraced as is rained gold confetti, with Crews loudly proclaiming, “You have just received the Golden Buzzer from the fifth Judge, the AGT audience!” The Judges joined the group onstage, sharing their heartfelt appreciation for the song, as members of the Mzansi Youth Choir shaped their hands into hearts, spreading love to the world. The epic victory comes just months after Nightbirde’s family and the Nightbirde Foundation released her posthumous debut album, which continues to inspire millions.
