The suspect, who is 25 years old and hails from the Cowdray Park neighborhood of Bulawayo, was taken into custody after he allegedly bit a police officer who had detained him for soliciting passengers.
Nhlanhla Khumalo was arraigned in front of the magistrate in Bulawayo, Busani Sibanda, on charges related to soliciting fares from passengers and assault.
He was remanded in custody until the 30th of December, 2022, and he was not asked to enter a plea.
On November 23, 2022, at approximately 12:50 p.m., while Marvelous Ndlovu and his colleagues were on duty patrolling the city center in civilian attire, they approached Sixth Avenue and saw Khumalo touting passengers. This is according to the allegations that have been made against Khumalo.
According to the reports, the law enforcement officers pretended to be potential passengers and got into the Honda Fit that was heading in the direction of Matopo.
As soon as they were inside the vehicle, they introduced themselves to Khumalo and informed him that he was being detained.
After that, they gave him the order to accompany them to the Central Police Station in Bulawayo.
Khumalo is said to have disobeyed the instruction when he drove his vehicle in a different direction and told the police officers that he was going to a mine in Matopo where he was going to teach them a lesson. According to the report, Khumalo did this while he was being pursued by the police.
Ndlovu attempted to place him under arrest when he arrived at the robot-controlled intersection at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street, but he became combative.
The court heard that Khumalo violently grabbed Ndlovu’s hand and bit him once. The incident occurred in front of the court.
The other officers were successful in placing him under arrest. B Metro
