Castle Tankard dumps Winky D, fans threaten boycott

Fans are livid after top musician Winky D was struck from this year’s Castle Tankard horse race line-up.

For over five years, Winky D has been a headlining act at the event, drawing huge crowds to the Borrowdale race course.

However, since the release of his 2023 album Eureka Eureka, the MuGarden hitmaker has faced criticism and accusations from the ruling party, Zanu PF-aligned organisations and officials that say his music is politically charged.

Castle Tankard is an annual horse racing show organised by Delta Beverages’ Castle Lager. The event attracts thousands and is one of the most anticipated social events in Zimbabwe.

The event will be held on 6 May 2023, and Delta released a poster with Alick Macheso and Enzo Ishall.

Last year, the ZRP stormed the stage as Winky D was performing and snatched the mic from him before shoving him off the stage and closing down the event, much to the chagrin of the crowd.

No Explanation Given Over Why Castle Tankard Removed Winky D

Despite being a regular performer at the Castle Tankard horse race, the dancehall chanter was not included in this year’s line-up. Delta Beverages did not explain why they have dropped him from the show, despite being a favourite.

Over the past few months, Winky D’s music has been deemed controversial, with some labelling it as political. Some ruling party officials have been vocal in their criticism of the artist and his music.

His last performance at Damview in Chitungwiza was abruptly cut by police officers, adding fuel to the already heated political debate.
