Deputy Minister Barbara Rwodzi Being Investigated By Police After Threatening A Cop For Arresting A ZANU PF Supporter

Tourism Deputy Minister Barbara Rwodzi is being investigated by the Zimbabwe Republic Police ZRP after she intimidated a police officer who arrested a ZANU PF supporter.

The audio was caught by a police officer from ZRP Charundura who had arrested Danger, an alleged ZANU PF supporter, for vandalising a CCC poster.

Anyone who defaces or destroys any poster displayed by any political party or candidate in connection with an election constitutes a crime and is punishable by a fine, imprisonment, or both, according to Section 151 (1) (a) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13).

In a recorded phone call, Barbara Rwodzi, the environment, climate, tourism, and hospitality minister, was heard verbally abusing a police officer.

The officer was accused of bias and incompetence for arresting a ZANU PF supporter in the tape, which was extensively shared on social media.

The deputy minister asked that the officer release the suspect on the grounds that she had the power to get involved. She also made threats to report the officer to his superiors and the commissioner general of the police.

But throughout the altercation, the officer maintained his composure and professionalism. He assured Rwodzi that he was abiding by the law and that he had no personal grudges towards anyone.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has acknowledged the audio and reacted on Twitter:

“The ZRP has taken note of an audio circulating on social media concerning the incident involving some ZRP Charundura members allegedly with the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Honourable Barbra Rwodzi. The case is now under investigations.”

Various groups, including civil society organisations, political parties, and regular people have all condemned the incident. They accused Rwodzi of abusing her position of authority and subverting the law.

Regarding the incident, Rwodzi has not made any public remarks or shown regret.
