South Africa’s Banyana Banyana In Historic Last 16 FIFA World Cup

On Wednesday, Banyana Banyana made history by reaching the last 16 of the Fifa World Cup for the first time ever. They achieved this by defeating Italy 3-2 in Wellington.

This victory, which was their first at the global tournament, saw them finish second in Group G. Consequently, they will join Sweden in the last 16, where they will face the winners of Group E.

Both teams needed a positive outcome from the match. Banyana had previously drawn 2-2 with Argentina after squandering a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Italy had lost 5-0 to Sweden. South Africa was without their injured captain, Refiloe Jane, and initially struggled. In the 11th minute, Karabo Dhlamini fouled Chira Beccari inside the box, leading to a penalty for Le Azzurre. Arianna Caruso converted the penalty, leaving Kaylin Swart helpless.

The South African team faced an early setback, but they persevered and launched numerous attacks. Captain Thembi Kgatlana attempted a shot, but it missed the target.

Robyn Moodlay also had a chance to score but hit the upright. Fortunately, Banyana managed to equalize thanks to an unfortunate own goal.

However, the Italian team almost regained their lead. During the second half, Banyana had to put their best foot forward to score.

Striker Hidah Magaia managed to score with an assist from Kgatlana. Unfortunately, Banyana’s defence was not strong enough, and Caruso scored a header from a corner kick.

In stoppage time, Kgatlana scored a final goal to secure the win for Banyana.
