CCC MP Kufahakutizwi arrested days after losing seat to Scott Sakupwanya

Former Mabvuku MP Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi has been arrested days after he lost his seat to ZANU PF candidate Scott Sakupwanya.

Kufahakutizwi was recalled from parliament by self-proclaimed CCC interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu. After successfully filing his nomination, the High Court barred him from running in the 9 December by-election after Tshabangu filed an application stopping him and other CCC candidates.

After the High Court judgement, Sakupwanya remained the only standing candidate in Mabvuku, and he won by default.

As if his woes aren’t enough, Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi was arrested earlier today. The CCC politician appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court earlier today, facing charges of assault and malicious property damage. The magistrate has since released him on free bail.

Mabvuku resident Michael Nyasulu dragged Kufahakutizwi to the police for assault.

On 18 November in the afternoon, there was a funeral opposite Nyasulu’s home. Mourners sat in his yard and destroyed his garden, the State alleges. Nyasulu then asked the mourners to move out of his garden, and an argument ensued.

The State added:

“[Nyasulu] went to a beer hall nearby, and when he returned to his place of residence, an unknown person who was gathered at the funeral noticed that the complainant [Nyasulu] was wearing a ZANU PF cap. The accused [Kufahakutizwi] then approached the complainant, grabbed him by the collar and assaulted him with clenched fists, alleging that [Nyasulu] had thrown stones at the mourners. The complainant ran away and was rescued by his brother William Nyasulu.”

CCC national deputy spokesperson Gift Ostallos Siziba reacted to the arrest of Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi:

“Hon Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi has been arrested over Trumped Up Charges of Assault and Malicious damage to property. This is the continuation of the crackdown and closure of democratic space in Zimbabwe.”
