What Next? as Chamisa quits CCC

Zimbabweans have been asking different questions regarding Nelson Chamisa’s decision to quit the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party which he formed two years ago.

The abrupt announcement by Chamisa caught many by surprise although some were already advocating that he abandon the party which was now under self-proclaimed Secretary General Senzeso Tshabangu. In his statement, Chamisa disowned Tshabangu saying he is an instrument of ruling ZANU PF;

Just 12 days after the swearing in of MPs and councilors, you saw the engineered emergence and sprouting of an impostor masquerading as an acting secretary general of CCC, a position and title that did not and does not exist in the CCC. This said person purported to wield powers to unilaterally recall citizens elected representatives, powers to instruct the Parliament, powers to instruct ZEC, powers to instruct the Courts, powers to disregard the electorate and power to impose citizens representatives to parliament and local authorities.

This person who is unknown to us, now single-handedly wields so much power. He has basically been turned into an organization, courtesy of the Zanu PF.

Chamisa says he will, as a way forward, pursue unity and a move away from hate politics which is based on inclusivity. He said;

To fix the legitimacy problem and to return Zimbabwe to majority rule we need all-inclusive politics for everyone and embark on comprehensive political, electoral and constitutional reforms to pave way and create a platform for peace, tolerance, reconciliation, unity and prosperity. We must get rid of toxicity, hate and leaders in public office must serve and not be served. Government must operate on the basis of truth, respect, accountability, responsibility and granting dignity to all citizens.

Zimbabweans are now eager to know what will happen to the Members of Parliament who were voted for under the name CCC and Chamisa’s leadership.

Some are calling for their withdrawal from Parliament as a way of showing loyalty to Chamisa.

Freddy Masarirevu, a lawyer who participated to be an MP in August 2023 says this is a chance to see loyalty;

Very tough decision from one end of the table. It is now to the MPs and Counciors to make a definitive choice. To abandon CCC means abonding their positions, it means a possibility of By-Elections and more expenditure on elections.

This is were loyalty is tested. The fact that Adv Chamisa had to make this decision individually may suggest that there was no consensus within the camp. Those that support this will be seen by withdrawing from Parly and Council. You have to feel for these leaders, but a choice has to be made.

Remaining in Parly after this pronouncement means one is accepting to be under CCC as now led by Sengezo Tshabangu (as it appears). The need for political funds will pursuade these “new” CCC leaders NOT to further recall MPs. This may be tempting to some legislatures and Councillors.

Given the confusion that was created by the legal battles, this was inevitable. Im thinking this means all legal matters will be abandoned, that officially Tshabangu can now do whatever he wants with the elected leaders (all of them) under CCC.

The short run effects are no doubt devastating but it could be for the better! All the best Adv@nelsonchamisa

Harare East MP Rusty Markham says he stands with Chamisa:

FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT AND FOR THE SAKE OF CLARITY – I STAND WITH NELSON CHAMISA

Kudzai Mutisi says that Chamisa should do a proper resignation and hand over the party’s financial books for audit.

Chamisa’s resignation won’t be accepted until he does a proper HANDOVER of audited books of the party. He can’t leave with @CCCZimbabwe assets or without a thorough audit of the party’s finances/assets. He gotta think twice, the law will catch up with him….
