Fans furious at Thuli Phongolo for dropping charges against DJ Maphorisa

Twitter users have expressed their disappointment at actress and DJ Thuli Phongolo’s decision to drop GBV charges against his boyfriend DJ Maphorisa.

The DJ has been making headlines this week after filing an assault case against Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, affectionately known as DJ Maphorisa at the Sandton Police Station. Maphorisa was locked up overnight on Sunday and on Monday he appeared before Randburg Magistrate’s Court where he was granted R4 000 bail.

According to reports, the couple had a heated argument and Maphorisa allegedly got violent and slapped Thuli Phongolo in the face. The DJ wasted no time and opened an assault case against him. A twist of events led to her withdrawing the case from court.

In a statement, the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) confirmed that the assault charges had been withdrawn.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, 07 May 2023, the accused assaulted his girlfriend, Thulisie Phongolo by hitting her open hands and strangling her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform. The complaint laid a charge with Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS) which acted promptly and arrested the accused. Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement and was before court to which she agreed for the accused to be released on bail. The court set bail at an amount of R4000” wrote Phindi Mjondwane, NPA Spokesperson, Gauteng Local Division

Tweeps have weighed in on Thuli’s decision to drop the case. They likened it to Babes Wodumo, who also dropped an assault charge against her late husband Mandla Mampintsha Maphumulo.

Thuli Phongolo left tweeps who rallied behind her and called out Maphorisa for the alleged GBV saga disappointed and fuming that she dropped the charges.
